How to Convince Someone to Be Your Mentor
How to Convince Someone to Be Your Mentor Five years ago I was living in a cramped three-bedroom apartment in East L.A., trying to build two startups simultaneously with no clue what I was doing and no seed capital. I had very little income, no connections and, frankly, no friends. Nevertheless, I was determined to find a way to become successful. I had recently attended an entrepreneurship conference and bought a DVD profiling young millionaires. One of the lessons from that DVD was to find a mentorâ"that is, a person who currently is where you want to be, who can take you under his or her wing and show you the ropes. I hadnât really made an effort to network with other entrepreneurs up until that point, so I couldnât just call one up and ask for an intro. So, I carefully crafted a series of emails and follow-ups to all of the young millionaires profiled in the DVD I was watching! Not only did I get responses, but I impressed one of them enough to agree to mentor me. This individual guided me when I needed it and eventually granted me access to her incredible network. I have since started, scaled and sold five companies. The key to my success was simple. I didnât want to blend into the crowd of others like me who I was certain were going after the very same entrepreneurs, so I set 8 simple rules for myself, as follows: 1. Do your research. Before you seek out a mentor, know which industry you want to learn about, and in what way. Then, come up with a shortlist of people youâd like to targetâ"and do your research on each. See if you can find their bios online; look for articles written on them; and check out their LinkedIn profiles. When you do reach out, make sure your research is apparent. This attention to detail will show your prospective mentor that youâre not just blanket emailing a ton of people at onceâ"that you actually want to learn from him or her specifically. 2. Donât be desperate. Many people seeking a mentor will resort to begging. Theyâll talk about how they donât know what theyâre doing, how their company is failing, or whatever other negatives they think will demonstrate their need for a mentor. However, just as a bank wonât loan to somebody whoâs broke as they donât want to risk not being paid back, successful people wonât mentor somebody they feel they canât make an instant impact on as they fear wasting their time. 3. Show that youâre a self-starter. You need to remember that the best mentors out there will often be the toughest to get. To give yourself the best chance of success, demonstrate that youâre not starting from complete scratch, that youâve made it pretty far on your own already. If youâre an entrepreneur, for example, youâve might explain that youâve already got a business plan or spent a significant amount of time getting to know the industry. If youâre a career changer, you might show that youâve taken some classes on the topic. If youâre looking to climb in the field in which you currently work, you might describe what youâve done so far. 4. Demonstrate self-confidence. Successful people were not always successful, but most of them were confidentâ"even early on in their careers or entrepreneurshipâ"in their ability to learn and become successful. In your communications with your potential mentor, your ability and passion to make things happen needs to be apparent not just in what you say and do, but how you say and do it. 5. Establish specific, low-pressure terms. Asking a successful entrepreneur, âWill you mentor me?â is akin to a man asking a woman heâs never met to marry him. Heâs much more likely to be successful if he instead has a nice conversation and asks if he can call her sometime. Approach a prospective mentor in the same way. Donât flat-out ask them to be your mentor. Instead, let them know that you really respect them and have learned a lot from what theyâve done, and then start with one specific question that shows youâre actively working on building your own empire. Get your first positive response, and then go from thereâ"slowly. 6. Donât create work for them. When starting to work with somebody you want to mentor you, make it known that youâre aware how busy they are and how valuable their time is. Then propose something as simple as a 15-minute call once per month when their schedule permits. 7. Showcase your implementation. Thereâs nothing more encouragingâ"and more flatteringâ"to a successful businessperson than someone showing them how much theyâve learned from them, how theyâve implemented it, and the conclusions and next questions theyâve come to as a result. After you ask your first question or two, donât even think about asking anything else until youâve implemented the advice theyâve given you and can show it. 8. Show your gratitude. By and large, if youâre asking a successful person to give you their valuable time, you need to acknowledge that you understand that they are making sacrifice on your behalf. While you likely donât have much to offer them at this point, you can remember to thank your mentor each time you talk. But also show your appreciation in a unique way now and again, perhaps with a gift around the holidays or when they help you with a particularly challenging problem. I prefer something like Edible Arrangements as it shows how thankful you are without sending an inappropriate message. 9 Tips For a Young Professional Resume
9 Tips For a Young Professional ResumePosted on August 13, 2014October 23, 2018 by Trista Winnie For those in the early stages of their careers, resume examples are crucial tools for learning about what should be on a young professional resumeas well as what should be left off. By now, most job applicants have probably heard the statistic that a recruiter spends an average of just six seconds looking at a resume. In this six seconds, the recruiter decides whether or leid to discard the resume, so being able to make a good impression at a glance is key. The question is, how do you make a good impression when you have limited professional experience? When writing a resume, those with little experience are often tempted to include everything about every role that theyve ever had. But the trick is that the relevance of the information you include on your resume is what matters most. A good resume is about quality, leid quantity. Particularly in todays job market, where many potential empl oyers rely on applicant tracking systems to do the initial scans of resumes for them, your focus should be on tailoring your resume to be relevant to your desired job. If youre early in your career, these resume tips will point you in the right direction.6 things to includeSummary statement.A summary statement is elend the same thing as a generic line stating your objective. Instead, a summary statement is the written equivalent of your elevator pitch. That is, its a quick summary highlighting what makes you a great candidatein a few sentences, explain your skills, accomplishments, and the ways in which you could benefit a potential employer.Link to online profile. This may be a link to your LinkedIn profile, or it could be a link to an online portfolio showcasing your writing, art, design, or other work you have created. Whatever you choose, make sure that you have a professional presence online. This does bedrngnis mean that you need to delete all traces of your social media profi les. In fact, having a social media presence where you demonstrate involvement in your desired fieldtalking about a conference you attended, posting a link to an article you readcan be a huge benefit during a job search. Further, Amanda Augustine, a career expert at TheLadders, states that 86% of recruiters will look up an applicants online profile. By including the link yourself, you can be sure that a recruiter will get to the correct profile, and not risk being mixed up with someone else.Suitable contact information. Still using that schmelzglas address that you created in high school? You may need to create a new email address. Choose one that is based on your name rather than on hobbies, jokes, nicknames, etc. For your phone number, make sure that the message callers hear when leaving a voicemail is clear, brief and sounds professional.Relevant activities. Young professionals who have limited paid experience might still have gained relevant, applicable experience by doing somet hing other than paid work. For example, college coursework, volunteering, or membership in clubs or associations can all provide hands-on experience. Including these types of experiences could also increase the chances that your resume contains the relevant keywords that an applicant tracking system will be looking for. Browsing through resume examples from people in your desired field can help you get a sense of the types of activities that are best to include. Dont go join six clubs just to have more to put on your resume instead, focus your efforts. For example, if you are in marketing or public relations, a volunteer role where you are regularly helping to plan and organize events can provide you with practical event planning experience that many employers find desirable.White space. Dont fear having too little information on your resume. Big blocks of text are hard to read quickly, and key information could get lost. A recruiter needs to be able to get a good sense of your back ground in the handful of seconds they will spend looking over your resume. A resume is not meant to take the place of an autobiography it is meant to give hiring managersand, increasingly, applicant tracking softwarean idea of whether you have the skills and experience necessary to succeed at the job. White space is easier on the eyes than clutter. If you hate the idea of leaving too much off your resume, then prepare a second, more-detailed version of your resume to bring with you once you are offered an in-person interview.Company descriptions. For each organization you have worked or volunteered for, consider adding a sentence or two describing its industry, size, and mission. This information can give recruiters a better overall picture of your experience. It can enhance your candidacy if a recruiter knows, for example, that your internship experience was in a start-up environment. Recruiters are not going to stop to research every organization that every applicant has been invol ved with. If you do the legwork for them, you just might include the information that lands your resume in the yes pile.3 things to leave offObjective statement. If a recruiter or hiring manager is reading your resume, they already know that you want a job. A stilted statement about your desire to obtain a position or leverage your experience is not necessary, and wont tell a recruiter anything that they dont already know. Leave off the objective statement when formatting your resume to keep it clutter-free.References upon request. Resume real estate is valuable there is no need to use any of it up with this throwaway line. If a potential employer asks you for references, and you are serious about wanting to land the job, then of course you will provide references. Besides, references are frequently not even mentioned until the in-person interview, making it premature to address the issue on your resume.Photos. Even if you have a polished, professional headshot, you should not inclu de a picture of yourself on your resume. Any time that a recruiter spends looking at a picture is less time that they spend reading about your skills and accomplishments. Additionally, photos and other graphics cannot always be read by applicant tracking systems. If the applicant tracking software cant read your resume properly, your resume might never get in front of a philanthropisch hiring manager. Make sure that your profile photos for social media look suitably professional, but keep the photos off your resume itself.Obviously there is a lot to consider when crafting a resume. It can be especially hard to make a resume that stands out when you are at the beginning stages of your career, and dont have many years of accomplishments or advanced education or training that you can highlight. Looking at resume examples from people who have more experience in your field can give you a good sense of what you should be aiming for, and what you will need to do to advance your career. Do you see multiple resume examples that include the same certification or accreditation? Is there an often-mentioned organization with a chapter in your area? These pieces of information can help you chart your course.By looking through resume examples from people at and beyond your experience level, you can make sure that your resume is a tool that will help you land your dream careereven if you are just beginning your career path.HAVE TWO MINUTES?Learn how Jobscan can optimize your resume for the tech used by most recruiters. How to Scan a Resume with Jobscan (208)Explore the Resume Match Report (223)???Full text tutorialGet your own reportfacebook inc Commentswpdevar_comment_1 span,wpdevar_comment_1 iframewidth100% important

Distance education for teachers a course for celebration
Distance education for teaczu sichs a course for celebration Distance education for teaczu sichs a course for celebrationPosted February 27, 2012, by Mike Kermode Studying by distance isnt everyones cup of tea. But for 44 year-old education student Sylvia Taylor, it provided an opportunity to fulfil a lifelong wish to become a teacher. Since high school, and throughout her 25 years in the superannuation industry, Sylvia coveted two things a university degree, and the skills to provide an education to children. The longer I stayed in the workforce and the older I and my own children became, I started to think that getting a degree and becoming a teacher was slipping out of my reach and would not become reality. Then something happened that would prove to be a catalyst for reconnecting with her dream the 2009 financial downturn, and her consequent redundancy. I remember talking to one of my girlfriends and having real doubts about starting a four-year degree at age 43. She wisely said that I can choose to be 47 and have a degree, or turn 47 and still not have one. She chose the former. Enrolling in a Certificate III Teachers Aide course at her local TAFE gave her a foothold in education. Then she enrolled in a Bachelor of Education (Primary) with OUA and Curtin University. It was available by distance which, for Sylvia, was perfect. Having children to care for and a husband who is employed on a shift work basis within the emergency services industry and is regularly on call, does not provide me with the consistent timeframes needed to attend classes on campus, says Sylvia. Because I can complete a large proportion of my university work while my children are at school and my husband is at work, I can minimise the impact on our family life. It also means she can work as a teachers aide while she studies. And while her education course includes some in-class practical training, fruchtwein of it is completed online a learning environment she considers superior to that of on-campus. Everything I need to be successful is available to me online, she says. This includes access to textbooks and additional library reading, assistance with study and assignment techniques, effortless online enrolment and access to FEE-HELP, access to tutors and a peer group for support while completing the units. Sylvia says that apart from feeding her passion for childhood literacy and education, her distance studies will expand her skills and her employment potential. Studying education has also given her a new sense of optimism. I feel like I have made a fresh start and extended the possibilities of what I can achieve in the future, she says. I am very proud of what I achieved so far and look forward to learning in an exciting and fulfilling career. Project Manager Deploys Army Training to Land Sales Job
Project Manager Deploys Army Training to Land Sales JobProject Manager Deploys Army Training to Land Sales JobMichael Stark leveraged his army aviation experience to land a sales job in Waco, Texas that required aircraft knowledge.Michael Stark welches working as an IT project manager in Phoenix last year for Perot Systems when he welches laid off as a full-time employee. Although the company kept him on as a project manager for a temporary project, he knew he welches living on borrowed time.It welches good that I stayed employed, the OpsLadder member said. But I could read the tea leaves I knew it wasnt going to last. That was last July. He began immediately to think about how to focus his job search, and while he initially decided to look at the health-care industry, it was his experience in his former career with the military that helped him eventually land the job offer he got in early March, as a program manager for L-3 Communications in Waco, Texas.Eyeing a growth market Health careI tried to concentrate on health care here in Phoenix, Stark said. I think it will be a growth area as the government focuses on restructuring the health-care system. Beginning in July, he started looking at job boards and networking through LinkedIn and project-management groups. I tapped into everything I could because I knew, with the economy the way it was, that it would be a huge effort, he said. While he got responses from recruiters and did some phone interviews, nothing was moving ahead. I knew it was a function of the economy, Stark said. A lot of companies were holding back until they could figure out what was happening with the economy, and what they would need. Not that it made him feel any better. I was absolutely terrified that I wouldnt find a job, he said. I wasnt getting the responses I had hoped. I was concerned with the snowball effect the economy was going to have on jobs. I had just moved into a house I had built, and I didnt want to lose it. However, as Star k adapted to his situation he forfeited some self-imposed standards, I made the decision in October that I would open myself up to jobs anywhere in the U.S. and zwischenstaatlichly, he said.Playing up former military experienceIn early December, he saw a listing on Ladders looking for someone with skills specific to what he had done in the Army. They needed a program manager with experience in Army aviation, he said. They were looking for someone familiar with air-worthiness certificates - what you need to ensure an aircraft is legal to fly - Army acquisition programs those were some of the discriminators, the special skills that made me especially qualified for it.Stark said he tweaked his resume to add a few military acronyms and make it a little more specific to aviation, and he sent it in. And he waited.I sent it in early December, and then heard nothing, he recalled. Id like to think I was qualified for all the jobs I applied for, but this one I liked, and I really felt I had a shot. He kept at his job search through December, but was starting to feel concerned in early January, when the postings were almost nonexistent. If there was a perfect storm for recruiting, early January was it, he said. Companies were not putting out new requisitions, the new presidential administration was not in office yet, no one was sure what was going to happen, and nothing was happening, he said. And then, in the third week of January, he received a call from L-3 Communications, saying they wanted him to come to Texas for an interview. It was long enough since I sent my resume that I had to ask them to send the job description again, he said. After one long day of interviews with everyone from the hiring manager to the chief financial officer, Stark went back to Phoenix feeling very confident. He wrote thank you notes to all the people he met, and then nothing. I heard nothing for three weeks, he said. As of February 8, I was unemployed, so I was still applying for jobs li ke crazy. Then, in early March, L-3 Communications called him with an offer for a job. His official title program manager on the joint cargo aircraft program.I havent been with Army aviation since I retired from the Army 12 years ago, so what they were really hiring me for was my leadership and management capabilities, he said. It just so happened that I had some background they were interested in.And despite the fact that he has to leave his new house, hes excited about his prospects in Waco while making the best of a bad housing market. Ive got an increase in pay, the possibility of international travel, and working on a job I am excited about, he said. The housing market in Phoenix is the worst in the nation, so Im not going to sell my house Ill put it up for rent, for now. And Ill rent in Waco, where the cost of living is lower.
