Theres no sophomore-year slump for the ASME INSPIRE program, the Societys digital course for middle- and high-school students that aims to ignite interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and its related careers. As of March 31, INSPIRE is now reaching more than 20,000 students in 551 schools across 43 states.The enthusiasm for the program continues to grow in the programs second year of implementation in school systems across the United States, with a 30 percent increase in schools and a nearly 45 percent increase in the total number of students this same time last year. Featuring a unique use of interactive simulations as a le arning tool, INSPIRE puts students in the role of secret agent. Certification and Certificates in Engineering Certification and Certificates in Engineering Certification and Certificates in Engineering John Koehr, Managing Director of Technology and Personnel Certification for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (owner of ASME.org), says certifications and certificates are vital for employers to determine whether they can do a specific job. Certification is defined as an independent assessment of a persons qualifications and a testing of that. It allows a leveling out of the ways someone can achieve a qualification. A certificate, on the other hand, shows something achieved on the training side. Certifications carry a level of portability for anywhere an employee would perform that job, regardless of where they would go on to work. Certificates, at least for ASME, tend to be without a time limit on their validity while the opposite is true for certifications. The challenge of a certification is you are trying to create an assessment exam thats fair and valid, he says. For us, we have a psychometrician (contracted licensed psychologist) who helps technical experts look at the content and do a detailed analysis of specific jobs or tasks. If someone doesnt pass, theres an appeal process to look at as well. Koehr says certifications vary in applicability and timeliness in mechanical engineering. You look at the area of nuclear power and there havent exactly been a lot of plants built in the last 30 years, he says. Certifications in those areas wont exactly be for everyone. But then you look at certified energy assessment practitioners. When you have standards and guides on compressed air systems and steam systems, then theres potentially more value. Current ASME certification programs include those for resource recovery facility operators, operators of high-capacity fossil fuel-fired plants, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing professionals. Certificate programs include nuclear and engineering management, along with others in development. The QRO has the most number of certificate holders and is for waste recovery resource operators. Were talking about burning garbage to make power, Koehr says. These plants are coming in all over the place and make sense from energy balance. These are not engineers but technical personnel. The next biggest is GDTP. That focuses on engineers, designers, and other office workers employing computer-aided drafting. This can be a major help, Koehr says. Those who dont have the skills to be specific in their drafting measurements can cost a company a decent amount of money. The last program is QFO, Koehr says. Its a qualification of fossil operators for high-capacity heating and power boilers. There arent many certificate holders but, like many areas, its growing. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. As she put it, “I saw an opportunity to leave, so I took it.” She is gainfully employed- a VP of an office design firm, in fact- and while I don’t know how much of her time away will be spent completely unplugged, I think it’s obvious that this is a person who values work-life balance. For as long as I’ve known her, she’s been an ambitious, hard-working professional. She started at her company years ago, and though there was certainly a time when the vacations were few and far between and working long hours and pulling late nights the standard, I’ve always admired her dedication to balance. Her huge career goals haven’t stopped her from capitalizing on life’s delights. Like most people who have a solid grip on the second part of the work-life balance equation, she recognizes that it’s not all one thing or all the other. There’s a reason it’s called balance, right? I don’t doubt that the death of her grandfather last year is what encouraged her to book her most recent adventure. In relaying her final days with him, she noted that he spoke of the importance of family and enjoying life, and not devoting one’s self entirely to work. I think he would’ve valued a recent Medium post by Todd Brison declaring that, Your desk won’t make it to your funeral. Neither will your Facebook account. In fact, unless you are very close, your boss probably won’t either. Apologies for being morbid, but it’s unavoidable when discussing the value of living a fulfilling life. Because here’s the harsh truth: Work isn’t going to hold your hand when you’re sick or dying But your family and friends will- unless you neglect them in favor of nonstop work. Yes, there may be a period in your career when your job is your top priority, when you’re working far more than 40 hours. As a result, you may find yourself shifting priorities. Relationships may even suffer slightly. So long as this doesn’t become the norm, all is not lost when it comes to finding better balance. In fact, it’s never too late to take charge of your life and determine that work, while important, doesn’t have to be everything. I’m not saying you should start thinking about your own funeral and who may or may not be in attendance, but I am suggesting that taking stock of the people and things that matter to you beyond a fancy title or a big bonus is a worthy exercise. And if you can’t think of anything, then all the more reason to stop in your tracks and figure it out. If you have vacation time, use it this year, without feeling guilty or anxious. If you have a chance to travel, take it. Unplug as best you can- if not for five weeks like my PTO-accumulating friend- then for an amount of time that feels like you’re investing in a future that matters to you. After all, at the end of your life, the cliché holds true: You’re not going to say, “Gee, I’m so happy I sacrificed my time out of the office to send out a few more emails.”

Any connection you have to the agent is extremely important. It might be the difference between having your manuscript read or tossed in the trash. But how often do we consider our own lives on another planet, seeing ourselves as the visitors from space? Just how would humans live their lives and meet all of their needs on another planet? A team at Northwestern University believed being able to manufacture many of the goods needed ourselves was the key, in particular our housing and shelter. And several members of the team went on to found Dimension Inx, in Chicago, IL, where they are creating a way to do just that and more. Even if the chance to apply or test their concept on other planets may be many decades away. Image: Dimension Inx Developing a method called 3D painting, the teams work involves new inks that are infused into green bodies, a weakly bound clay material. We can take these green bodies and we sinter the particles together by putting them into a furnace after the printer. It burns off the polymer and makes these ceramic-type structures, says co-founder Ramille Shah, also assistant professor at Northwestern University. [The material] is no longer flexible but stronger, and the iron oxide in there can make it magnetic because metal parts are in there. The most important stage in the process is during the furnace firing, when the particles within the structure start to merge together. You can tailor the firing process to have varying degrees of porosities and varying degrees of mechanical properties based on the firing protocol and the atmosphere you choose to use in the oven, Shah says. The process could be used to construct durable buildings or shelters on other planets, says co-founder Adam Jakus, who was a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University when he started working on the project. Housing is clearly one of the most important aspects to colonizing other worlds. [An important] part of our work is that you dont have to use a powder bed. And all the materials [we use] can be found on the places youd first be considering for colonization, like the moon and Mars, he says. Even if it isnt then, you could bring the material and it can be recycled. The materials they used to test whether the method could potentially work were NASA-approved for Mars and the moon, Jakus says. One member of the team, Katie Koube, had worked at NASA as an intern. She was looking at our 3D printing process and painting 3D biomaterials and thats when we realized other materials could be implemented, Jakus says. You dont change the way you paint. If you want to 3D print steel or 3D print ovary tissue, you dont change the way you do it. Its still about getting the raw materials. Then it comes down to knowing what to do with them. That doesn’t mean you can’t be a leader - even to your boss. Here’s the thing: “ your boss wants to see you act as a leader,” millennial career expert Jill Jacinto says. And just one (very important) reason why is because “your boss wants to know you have what it takes to manage a project or team before he or she considers you for a promotion,” Jacinto explains. Or, as Brooks Harper , career speaker and author of Why Should We Hire You , points out, “it’s important to remember that every day is an interview. Every day you are interviewing for your next merit increase or possible promotion. Employing your leadership skills in the right manner- from a subordinate position- benefits the entire team, lessens your boss’ burden and shows you’re ready for the next step.” That all makes sense. But if you’re still scared to be, well, “bossy” to your manager, we also understand. In that case, there’s even more good news: You can effectively lead in your office without stepping on your boss’ toes, our experts say. Here’s how. Leaders are proactive, not reactive. Taken in a work context, “great leaders make a plan well before their work is due,” says Jacinto. So if you want to lead at work, you can “motivate yourself to think beyond your current project,” she says. For example, you can ask: “What will the client need when this quarter is finished?” Jacinto says. Them “set new goals, come up with progressive ideas, do extensive research,” or whatever you need to do to stay ahead of the curve- and on your boss’ good radar. 2. Be your boss’ right-hand man or woman. This isn’t acting as an assistant when you’re three steps above that title. (And it’s definitely not about being a kiss-up.) Instead, this means you should learn from your boss by observing by his or her side. “Understand how they operate and what they need in different situations,” advises Jacinto. Why? “You will always be prepared if you are able to study their professional behavior,” she explains. “And being able to provide examples or answers to their questions will be a great win for you.”   Good leaders know how to talk, and more importantly, what to say. Harper suggests you hone your communication skills with your boss- letting him or her know what you are doing, how you’re getting it accomplished, and why you’re spending your time on this project- you’ll not only show your higher-up the respect he or she deserved, but “you’ll ensure you aren’t usurping authority,” he says. 4. Do it now and ask for forgiveness later. On the flip side of that coin, a leader doesn’t always ask for permission. So while this piece of advice is a little risky, it can pay off big time, if you take it the right way. The right way, of course, to move forward without your boss’ permission is “when you have a great opportunity and no time to run it by your boss,” says Jacinto. Examples of those great opportunities include sending a client or vendor a thank you note, incorporating A/B testing in emails, or creating new engagement on social media channels, Jacinto says. In these cases, “test the waters and put your plan into motion before getting a green light from your manager,” she says. When it works, your boss will be glad you took the initiative and may give you more future responsibility.
